Four tips to help you design a functional office layout

Unlock productivity and improve team morale in the process by transforming your commercial office space for the better. There are four main things to take into consideration when designing a functional office layout. Whether you’re creating a company from scratch or amending an existing company office layout the principles are the same.

There has to be an appreciation for spatial layout, electrical requirements, lighting and the ergonomics of avoiding work-related injuries.

Spatial Layout
The layout of your office needs to suit the day-to-day requirements of your employees. It very much depends on the industry you are in. If fostering teamwork is a necessity, you may arrange small groups of desks or cubicles for teams allowing for instant interaction. Similarly, if your industry is geared to individual working you may wish to use a train track approach to maximise office space by constructing rows of desks with a central aisle formed. These are just two common functional office layouts used in the workplace.

Electrical necessities
It is important to consider the whereabouts of your electrical equipment when designing the layout of your office workstations. You will need to factor in such necessities as power outlets, telephone lines, internet lines, printers, photocopiers, heaters and more. Health and safety is such an important issue and it is vital there are no overhanging wires or leads that will not only create a safety hazard; it will also look extremely unprofessional.

Office lighting
Aside from the planning of your desks or cubicles it is also important to ensure the workspace includes enough ambient lighting and natural light. Windows are obviously the best source of natural light but it is important to complement this with enough ambient lighting overhead to prevent eye strain at workstations. You may also look to supplement your office lighting with spotlights on individual desks or cubicles.

A safe environment
A clean and safe working environment is far more likely to encourage optimum productivity from your workforce. Design a functional office layout to suit employees with ease of access to doors, fire escapes, toilets and kitchen facilities that will make them feel right at home.
