Coping with summer temperatures in the office

There are a variety of office solutions to keep employees comfortable and maintain team morale in the summer sunAlthough the UK is fortunate to enjoy a temperate climate the office can be an excruciating place to be in the humid summer months. Many commercial properties are not built to counteract hot, humid temperatures so coping with heat is a constant battle for many office workers.
The Workplace Regulations 1992 states that the temperature in workrooms should be at least 16 degrees Celsius, unless the workplace involves stringent physical effort in which case the room temperature can be at least 13 degrees Celsius.
Fortunately there are a variety of office solutions to keep employees comfortable and maintain team morale in the summer sun.
Permanent or free-standing Air Conditioning
Although money is unlikely to be no object in the current financial climate it may be cost-effective in the long term to install permanent or free-standing Air Conditioning units within the office. This is particularly attractive if your office space suffers from a lack of windows or circulation as A/C operates best in closed environments. It is worth noting that by installing Air Conditioning you are increasing your businesses’ carbon footprint, while some workers may not appreciate sitting close to A/C units – this is something that you will have to weigh up and consider.
Moderate internal heat sources
If you haven’t already it is highly recommended that you exchange conventional light bulbs, which release their energy as heat, for energy-efficient light bulbs that not only remove an internal heat source within the office but cut down your energy bills simultaneously. In a conventional office containing desktop computers, photocopiers and printers it is important to switch these machines off when not in use as they also produce significant amounts of heat in operation.
Provide shade for your windows
Prevention is better than cure, so consider fitting effective blinds for your office windows that prevent the sun’s rays from entering the office and warming the air within the building. Ground floor commercial properties to let can be protected by planting fast-growing plants around window panes to not only provide effective shade but an attractive new dimension to your office space.
Keep employees hydrated
While you cannot force your employees to rehydrate in the workplace you can provide them with ample opportunity to do so and stay cool as a result. Install easy-access drinking water in kitchen areas or water dispensers in the office. Encourage employees to avoid sugary drinks and drinking too much tea and coffee which does little to aid the rehydration process.
